March: Focus on the Center of your Home

We begin the month headed into a third quarter moon. This is a good time to let go of clutter and anything that has piled up over the winter months. You’re more likely to be willing to let things go during third quarter moons. Put some effort into thinning things out. Chances are, you won’t miss them.

The new moon is Sunday, March 10th. It’s also the day we move the clocks forward one hour. The energy of this new moon in Pisces is associated with the Center of your home, your spiritual and mental health, and your overall well-being. It’s a transition month as we emerge from the slower winter energies and spring forth. Pay attention to your dreams, freshen up your home and revitalize your mind, body, and spirit.

Pisces is a water sign that is ruled by Neptune and symbolized by two fish. Traits include being emotionally sensitive, compassionate, creative, thoughtful, empathetic, and generous. The downside includes being wishy-washy, moody, emotionally closed off and easily taken advantage of.

This is a month to dream about what’s possible and envision it happening. In New England, we usually have mixed weather … winter one day and spring the next. March is a good month to dislodge things that have been stuck all winter. Clean out closets and cabinets. Reorganize areas where clutter accumulated over the winter. As you do so, place your focus on how you’d like to move forward. What inspires you and gets you excited and interested each day? I encourage you to do more of the activities that bring you joy.

In your home, clean, refresh and re-energize the Center of your space. The energy of the Center expands and permeates throughout your entire home. In my home, this is my dining room. I usually have a vase of fresh flowers on the table. I find that this is one of the fastest ways to boost energy. The color and type of flowers change depending on the season, my mood and availability.

A buffet cabinet stores silverware, table linens, candles, and extra dishes. I recently gave away table linens that I no longer use, and cleared our candle drawer of partially burnt candles. Many family photos are also displayed in the Center of my home. They are a nice reminder of various events and gatherings. This month, I’ll clean the frames and shine the glass. Vacuuming deep into the corners, high and low, of this area is another way I’ll shift the chi.

Keeping the Flying Stars system in mind, red is a good color to include this year, while also keeping the area relatively quiet.

The Center of your Home relates to Health and Overall Well-Being

The quality of energy in the Center of your home emits a pulse, similar to a heartbeat. It influences your spiritual, physical, and mental health, and overall well-being. What’s happening in the Center of your home or wherever you spend most of your time? Stroll through this area and notice what captures your attention. You might also take a few photos and study them. How do you feel? What are you noticing? Is it time to make a change?

Pay Attention to your Stomach

Healthwise, the Center is associated with your stomach and spleen. Paying attention to your “gut” and “gut feel” is a healthy habit. Your gut reads situations and alerts you to good and bad well ahead of your brain. Finetuning your intuitive feel for people and situations can guide you through life more easily than waiting for others means of confirmation or proof.

Earth Energy and the Center of your Home

Earth energy provides the foundation for the Center of your space. When in balance, Earth is nurturing, stabilizing and grounded. You feel supported in your endeavors, with a solid foundation underfoot. Concerns about survival, a lack of stability, muddled thinking, and continual worry are signs of imbalanced Earth energy. Another sign of imbalance is feeling that you can’t do enough to please others. If you recognize any of these traits or emotions, this would be a good month to shake up the Center of your home and revitalize it. Sitting rooms, bedrooms and porches are also Earth-type rooms … spaces where you nurture, relax, and rejuvenate yourself.

Earth and the Five Elements

In the Five Element system, Earth energy is supported and strengthened by Fire. It is depleted by Metal and weakened by Wood and Water. If you want to accentuate or activate Earth energy, emphasize the Fire and Earth elements.

During 2024, the feng shui Flying Stars also call for more Fire and Earth energy in the Center of your home. Therefore, include red and yellow, as well as crystals and candles. If the Center of your home feels sluggish, hang a crystal to help get things moving. You want some movement, but not too much. A red rug or floor mat would also be beneficial, if it would work in your space. To help balance the energies, regularly light a candle in the Center of your home as well this year.

Here are some ideas for balancing the Five Elements in the Center of your home this year:

During 2024 incorporate Fire and Earth items into the Center of your home…

Earth energy grounds and anchors your space. Earth items include:

  • Wooden furniture (because it’s harvested wood)
  • pottery, earthenware, bricks, and clay
  • seashells and natural items
  • square shapes
  • oversized or heavy furniture that hugs the ground
  • yellow, gold, brown, orange, and autumn/earth tones.

Fire brings dazzling, sparkling energy to a space. It is represented by:

  • Fire, flames, lights, sunlight, candles
  • Triangles, pyramids, diamond, and cone shapes
  • People and animals, as well as pictures and sculptures of people and animals
  • Electronics and electrical items
  • Red, burgundy and the red palette

Red candles in earthenware candle holders are a wonderful way to incorporate Fire and Earth energy in the Center of your home.

During 2024, reduce (or avoid adding) Metal, Water, and Wood energies in the Center of your home …

Metal energy helps bring clarity to a space. Metal items include:

  • Physical metal: gold, silver, brass, aluminum, etc.  (pots & pans, lamps, picture frames)
  • marble, granite, flagstone
  • circles, oval and arch shapes
  • white, gray, and pastel shades.

Water energy helps to create flow. It also brings reflective and philosophical qualities. Water is represented by:

  • Water features and water itself
  • Mirrors, windows, glass, reflective and shiny surfaces
  • Black and very dark colors
  • Free form, wavy and symmetrical shapes
  • Pictures of lakes, rivers, harbors, ocean views

Wood energy is about vibrancy, growth, and expansion. Wood is represented by:

  • Fresh flowers, plants, and trees
  • Floral fabrics and patterns
  • Vertical stripes and tall columns
  • Green and blue

Everything in your space contributes to energetic balance on multiple levels. For example, a wooden dining room table and chairs represent Earth energy. Place a red or pink tablecloth to introduce Fire energy. Red candles on the table would bring in welcome Fire energy too. Pottery and anything made from earthy materials bring in the Earth element, as does the color yellow, and the associated palette.

Revitalize the Heart of Your Home prior to March 10th

When you feel good in your space and you enjoy spending time there, chances are the energy is harmonized. This is the feeling to create throughout your entire house, one room at a time. This is a good month to make some seasonal adjustments. I recommend beginning with a deep cleaning and then refresh the area to welcome in spring, prior to the March 10th new moon. Open up any blocked or clogged areas. Thin out paper piles. Clear excess from tabletops and counters. Return misplaced items to their proper location. Release or recycle things that you don’t use or no longer want or need.

Set an Intention on March 10th for Overall Well-Being

Reflect on your overall well-being and set an intention on Sunday, March 10th, in alignment with the new moon. Reinforce your wishes by writing them down. A journal is a great place to do so. Relax and meditate for at least to few moments to focus on where you’re headed and to help your intentions to take root. As you do so, visualize your intentions happening, without worrying about how. Skip over how things might unfold since this bogs you down. Let the Universe handle the “how.” Your job is to stay focused on the end result.

Check-in at the Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse

The full moon check-in that aligns with adjustments to the Center of your space is Monday. March 25th. This is the time to reflect on the objectives you set at the March 10th new moon and notice how they may have taken root for you. If you’re not seeing any signs, don’t worry. When you plant a seed, it takes time for the roots to develop and for the plant to emerge from the soil. Similar development happens with your intentions. A lot happens behind the scenes and out of view. Stay focused on the outcome without disrupting the process through worry, doubt, or fear. Instead, look for signs that what you’ve asked for is beginning to happen. The signs might be small and very subtle at first. Patience and optimism help.

We also have a penumbral lunar eclipse that day at 5 degrees Libra 7 minutes. Although it will be somewhat visible in New England, it will occur during the wee hours of the morning when most people are typically sleeping. According to Madeline Gerwick, this eclipse is associated with “flashes of insight, genius ideas, intuitive jumps, and visionary dreams.” If you are impacted by this eclipse, you might need more freedom to pursue your dream, create your vision or brin your inspiration into being.

April 8 Solar Eclipse

This will be followed by a total solar eclipse on April 8. Parts of NY, VT and NH will be in the line of complete darkness for about 3 – 4 minutes, just prior to 3:30 pm. I’ll write about this in April. You’ll hear a lot about this in the press, as it is a rare event. This eclipse will be at 19 degrees Aries 24 minutes. You are likely to be impacted by this eclipse if you have important planets within five degrees of either side (14– 24 degrees Aries 24 minutes).
